The geographical distribution, population structure and pollination ecology are key aspects in the conservation and management of rare orchids. Here, we address these aspects and the main threats affecting the endangered Cuban orchid Broughtonia cubensis. This rewardless orchid is self‐compatible, but pollinator dependent. However, seed production can be negatively affected by insect‐mediated selfing. Three species of small bee (genera Ceratina and Lasioglossum) act as pollinators. As in the case of other nectarless orchids, we detected two species of plant producing large amounts of nectar in the area, the floral morphology of which closely resembles that of B. cubensis. The simultaneous flowering of these species could positively affect the reproductive success of B. cubensis. Nonetheless, the fitness of this orchid in natural conditions is low, possibly related to strong pollen limitation. To the problems arising from reduced fitness is added the fact that its historical distribution range has been greatly reduced in recent years. Throughout this study, we have detected dramatic reductions in the population sizes, in some cases as a result of human plundering, but also as a consequence of hurricanes. Aims

We examined the importance of partial seed consumption (cotyledon loss) by rabbits in the early establishment of seedlings of cork oaks restricted to nutrient-impoverished soils.

Methods

To determine the importance of cotyledons in the growth and development of seedlings, we simulated two levels of predation [light (30 % cotyledon loss) and heavy (60 % loss) partial consumption] and two soil nutrient contents (nutrient-poor soil, nutrient-rich soil). Seedlings height, root length, dry root and shoot biomass, specific leaf mass, leaf density, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and photosynthetic pigment concentrations were determined.

Results

Results indicated that effect of nutrient level on the growth of the oak seedlings was more important than that of cotyledon biomass. However, in nutrient–poor soils, cotyledon biomass played a major role in the early performance of cork oaks. Acorns grown in nutrient-rich substrate, despite having greater aerial vigor, were slower to develop a vertical root, and hence less likely to reach permanent moisture. Cotyledon loss caused a decrease in the biomass of roots and shoots when acorns were heavily consumed, and as a result experienced a reduction in net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll concentration. Survival of seedlings was unaffected by either soil type or cotyledon loss.

Conclusions

Our results show that effects of soil type on the survival of oak seedlings were more important than those of cotyledon biomass. However, in a competitive situation, cotyledon biomass, as an indicative of growth nutrient support rather than an energy source, could be vital in a nutrient-poor environment, particularly in Mediterranean climate regions and for species with little inherent drought tolerance (as is the case of Quercus spp.), where rapid root growth is required to ensure that contact with soil moisture is maintained over the first summer.  相似文献

Ovsynch-type synchronization of ovulation protocols have suboptimal synchronization rates due to reduced ovulation to the first GnRH treatment and inadequate luteolysis to the prostaglandin F (PGF) treatment before timed artificial insemination (TAI). Our objective was to determine whether increasing the dose of the first GnRH or the PGF treatment during the Breeding-Ovsynch portion of Double-Ovsynch could improve the rates of ovulation and luteolysis and therefore increase pregnancies per artificial insemination (P/AI). In experiment 1, cows were randomly assigned to a two-by-two factorial design to receive either a low (L) or high (H) doses of GnRH (Gonadorelin; 100 vs. 200 μg) and a PGF analogue (cloprostenol; 500 vs. 750 μg) resulting in the following treatments: LL (n = 263), HL (n = 277), LH (n = 270), and HH (n = 274). Transrectal ultrasonography and serum progesterone (P4) were used to assess ovulation to GnRH1, GnRH2, and luteal regression after PGF during Breeding-Ovsynch in a subgroup of cows (n = 651 at each evaluation). Pregnancy status was assessed 29, 39, and 74 days after TAI. In experiment 2, cows were randomly assigned to LL (n = 220) or HH (n = 226) treatment as described for experiment 1. For experiment 1, ovulation to GnRH1 was greater (P = 0.01) for cows receiving H versus L GnRH (66.6% [217/326] vs. 57.5% [187/325]) treatment, but only for cows with elevated P4 at GnRH1. Cows that ovulated to GnRH1 had increased (P < 0.001) fertility compared with cows that did not ovulate (52.2% vs. 38.5%); however, no effect of higher dose of GnRH on fertility was detected. The greater PGF dose increased luteal regression primarily in multiparous cows (P = 0.03) and tended to increase fertility (P = 0.05) only at the pregnancy diagnosis 39 days after TAI. Overall, P/AI was 47.0% at 29 days and 39.7% at 74 days after TAI; P/AI did not differ (P = 0.10) among treatments at 74 days (LL, 34.6%; HL, 40.8%; LH, 42.2%; HH, 40.9%) and was greater (P < 0.001) for primiparous cows than for multiparous cows (46.1% vs. 33.8%). For experiment 2, P/AI did not differ (P = 0.21) between H versus L treatments (44.2% [100/226] vs. 40.5% [89/220]). Thus, despite an increase in ovulatory response to GnRH1 and luteal regression to PGF, there were only marginal effects of increasing dose of GnRH or PGF on fertility to TAI after Double-Ovsynch.  相似文献

Several indole derivatives, that were highly potent ligands of GluN2B-subunit-containing N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, also demonstrated antioxidant properties in ABTS method. In particular, the 2-(4-benzylpiperidin-1-yl)-1-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethanone (1) proved to be a dual-effective neuroprotective agent. With the aim to increase the antioxidant properties we added a catechol moiety onto piperidine moiety. The designed hybrid derivative 3,4-dihydroxy-N-[1-[2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)-2-oxoethyl]piperidin-4-yl]benzamide (10) was the most effective antioxidant agent (>94.1 ± 0.1% of inhibition at 17 μM) and showed GluN2B/NMDA receptor affinity at low micromolar concentration (IC50 0.66 μM). By means of computational studies we explored the effect of the presence of this antioxidant fragment during the recognition process to binding pocket.  相似文献

The latest scientific findings concerning PDE7 and PDE4 inhibition suggest that selective small-molecule inhibitors of both enzymes could provide a novel approach to treat a variety of immunological diseases. In this context, we describe a new series of quinazoline derivatives from quinazolin-4-thiones which include a substituted biphenyl fragment. It has been proved, for several classes of continuous and discrete dynamical systems, that the presence of a positive (resp. negative) circuit in the interaction graph of a system is a necessary condition for the presence of multiple stable states (resp. a cyclic attractor). A positive (resp. negative) circuit is said to be functional when it “generates” several stable states (resp. a cyclic attractor). Intraspecific and interspecific embryo transfer in domestic South American camelids is developing into a well-established technique. Reports reveal many benefits of using reproductive biotechnologies to allow rapid propagation of alpacas and llamas of high genetic merit (e.g., high fiber quality, preserve color variation). The objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information about embryo transfer in domestic South American camelids. Specific information is provided on criteria for male selection, donor and recipient synchronization, the practice of single- vs. super-ovulation protocols, embryo recovery and transfer techniques, advances in cryopreservation of embryos, results of intra- and inter-specific transfer, and the future of the embryo transfer in domestic South American camelids.  相似文献

Sigma-1 (σ1) affinities of methyl 2-(aminomethyl)-1-phenylcyclopropane-1-carboxylate (MAPCC) derivatives were modelled by the genetic algorithm with linear assignment of hypermolecular alignment of datasets (GALAHAD) and the comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA)/comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods. GALAHAD was used for deriving the 3D pharmacophore pattern that encompasses the most potent σ1 ligands within this series. Five MAPCC derivatives with a high σ1 affinity were used for deriving this model. The obtained model included a nitrogen atom, the hydrophobes and the hydrogen bond acceptor features; it was able to identify other potent σ1 ligands. On the other hand, CoMFA and CoMSIA methods were used for deriving quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models. All QSAR models were trained with 17 compounds, after which they were evaluated for predictive ability with additional five compounds. The best QSAR model was obtained by using CoMSIA, including steric, electrostatic and hydrophobic fields, and had a good predictive quality according to both internal and external validation criteria. In general, the models described herein provide meaningful information relevant for the rational design of new σ1 ligands.  相似文献
